What is a Gestational Surrogate?

A Gestational Surrogate is someone who becomes pregnant through IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) and carries that baby for someone else. A GS has no genetic link to the embryo that is implanted; the embryo that is implanted via IVF results from sperm from either an Intended Father or a sperm donor and an egg from either an Intended Mother or an egg donor.

This is different from a Traditional Surrogate. A Traditional Surrogate is someone who becomes pregnant through Artificial Insemination using her own egg(s). She would have a genetic link to the child.

I found a really good post (titled How Do Surrogates Get Pregnant?) at Mormon Surrogate that explains the process quite nicely.
